Construction is an incredibly large and diverse industry that is underperforming in technology and as a consequence perhaps underperforming more generally.

By connecting and promoting the construction tech community, we can raise the status of construction technology businesses and increase their ability to attract investment and talent. Elevating the construction technology sector drives innovation and productivity, ultimately benefiting the entire construction industry in Australia.

 

I’ve been in construction for more than 20 years, I love the people and the work and I’ve made it my mission to turn this industry around by building software products to improve the industry and the lives of the people involved in construction.

 

Through my journey with my startup: Buttress (see buttress.com.au) I have found that not only is the construction industry the most backwards in terms of innovation - this is backed up by a report from the productivity commission BTW - it is also seen as the most uninspiring and unrelatable space in the startup community and the tech sector more broadly.

It’s time to change this.

 

Construction tech businesses like mine find it hard to attract tech talent, to inspire people around them to join their startup. My startup alone will not change this and a collective approach is needed. We’ve seen these situations turned around before - just think about the Taxi industry in the early 2000’s - Uber didn’t do it alone - they banded together to create a shared narrative - around a sharing economy. This is what I think is needed in construction.

Build Tech Australia is a point of connection for people in construction who are passionate about technology.
